DOWTY WOLVERHAMPTON GOLF SOCIETY

17th May 2009

The 21 members who travelled to The Abbey Golf & Country Club to contest the Sports & Welfare Shield were greeted by some pleasant sunshine on their arrival, however local weather forecasts proved to be true as the conditions deteriorated as the competition began. Rain, Hail, Thunder & Lightning were all encountered as play progressed. scoring was difficult for all teams with the exception of "the dream team" of Des Lyttle,  Pete Williams & Bob Edwards who ran out winners with a highly creditable score of 80 points, 2 under par for the day. In 2nd place with 72 points ( 6 over ) were Mike Baldwin, Ron Washbrook & Bob Duckett .

Would all members please note that we need at least 16 players for the Greenfields match on Thursday 28th of May. The match is open to all members & guests. 5.30p.m. Shotgun  start cost will be around £6 to include a buffet style meal afterwards. If anyone wishes to play please inform Eric Clifton, John Brownbill or Stuart Davis as soon as possible.

10th June 2009

20 Members travelled to The Windmill Golf Centre near Coventry to contest The George Booth Memorial & Geoff Lutner Pairs Trophies. Despite poor weather forcasts a fairly warm if cloudy day was enjoyed by all. The George Booth Memorial played over 10 holes in the morning as a Betterball Medal was won by Pete Williams & Bob Duckett with a tremendous score of 31 equating to 9 under par. Next home on a tight challenging course were Keith Brawn & Mark Haywood with 35 at 5 under par. After an excellent lunch players set out for the Geoff Lutner Pairs  trophy played as a Better ball Stableford with both scores to count on the par 3 holes. As in many recent events the team scoring heavily on the par 3's were at the head of the field with John Brownbill & Ekrem Kaya ( winning his first society event ) scoring 51 points.. This was sufficient to see them home from the pairing of Ian Moorby & Sammy Hind just beating Mike Baldwin & Leigh Clark. Both teams scoring 50 points with Ian & Sammy winning by virtue of a better back 9. An excellent evening meal rounded off a succesful day at this new venue for the Society.

12th July 2009

On Friday the 10th, 22 members including new member Tim Groves contested the Strokeplay Championship at Chesterton Valley Golf Club. Almost perfect conditions saw 8 players break nett par.The highlight of the afternoon was a  a gross 70 (1 under par) from Des Lyttle leaving him at nett 65 . Amazingly this was not enough to beat last man in Roger Collins who recorded his first society win with a tremendous 78 giving him victory with a nett 59.

During the afternoon two of the quarter finals of the knockout were contested with the following results.

Bob Duckett  beat Ekrem Kaya  3 & 2

Phil Plant beat Tom Hall 5 & 4

During the evening's presentation the Society Secretary expressed his concerns over the poor standard of communication within the Society regarding members entries to fixtures. Members are not informing the committe via the correct routes & this currently causing great difficulty in finding out who is & who is not attending fixtures. All members should now have been given a letter from the Secretary expressing his concerns over entries. All future fixtures will now  have their closing date brought forward to 2 weeks prior to any fixture instead of the normal 1 week to try & improve the situation. The comittee is currently looking at a new way of entering future fixtures. Information regarding this will be posted on the web site as soon as available.

12th August 2009

On Friday the 7th August 23 members travelled to Wishaw Golf Club to contest the F.A. Hewitt Trophy. Extremely wet conditions underfoot almost saw the event cancelled but a very pleasant warm afternoon allowed the competition to be completed. Most of the field struggled with the conditions with only 4 players scoring more than 30 points. Phil Latham with 31 points was the early pacesetter, eventually being overhauled by Ian Moorby with 34 points which lead until Phil Plant came in with 35 points which proved to be the winning score.

19th September 2009

A disappointing turn out of 23 members travelled to Lilleshall Golf Club on Thursday 17th to contest the Captain's Prize.Perfect weather greeted the field who found a tough but fair course ready for 27 holes to be played under Stableford conditions. The back nine of the afternoon round proved to be the decisive factor in deciding the eventual winner, Neil Clifton with a highly creditable 50 points.Second home was Leigh Clark on 49 points from Pete Williams also on 49 points with Leigh's back 18 of 35 points deciding the positions.

During the day several other season long trophies were also resolved, Dave Broome winning the Consistency Prize,Neil Clifton winning the Points competition & Pete Williams winning the Committee Cup.

During the afternoon round Ron Washbrook succesfully defended his Individual Matchplay title by defeating Phil Plant.

The evening meal was followed by the annual prize presentation, with speeches by the Captain, Chairman, & also Graham Davis current Vice Captain of Lilleshall who thanked the Society for choosing Lilleshall for their final event of the season. A most enjoyable day with good food, excellent hospitality from Lilleshall & some good golf.

Matters Arising From Last Meeting

No matters arose from the last meeting.

Secretary’s Report

R.W read out his report on the season:

Overall I think the last year has been successful. I have had little or no problems regarding the booking of fixtures, and have found most clubs very helpful and flexible. I hope Eric had a good year and hope he enjoyed his year as Captain. Though the captain’s day fixture attendance was a little disappointing.

It is at this point that brings me onto the slightly worrying topic of dwindling numbers. I hope we can all try to encourage a few new members for the coming season, as this will keep the monthly fixture numbers up at a healthy 20 plus for each comp, which I’m sure you’ll all agree makes it better competition for all involved.

One last point where a problem occurred during 2009 was the receiving of notification of a player’s intention to play at a fixture. The point was raised at the Chesterton valley competition, and by way of circulation of e-mail addresses of as many members as possible especially the committee, we hope the situation can improve for 2010. There will be an excel spread sheet with members contact details on for those who wish to give them, anyone who isn’t on it can send details to Stuart or any committee member to keep things up to date.

A big thank you to S.D for his support during the last year and also to all the committee. A quick message to next years captain Jason to wish you luck and hope you enjoy your year.

S.D conveyed a vote of thanks.

Treasurer’s Report

J.B. gave his usual excellent detailed report on the society finances. The following below is a basic balance of the society up to 24th Nov 2009.  A full rundown of the 2009 income and expenditure is available upon request.   We had 36 members 3 of which paid £30 as late payers.

SD conveyed a vote of thanks.

Match Secretary’s Report

S..D spoke of the Match Secretary’s position and the fact that it more or less runs itself since the evolution of the website. All comps ran smoothly and consistency ran better, from changes made from 2008.

The committee conveyed a vote of thanks.

Election Of Officers

R.W proposed S.D as chairman and J.B seconded

At this point S.D made a proposal, again as a repeat of 2008, that in light of the fact that the society had ran extremely smoothly during the past 12 months, all the present people standing should stand next year. This is of course if they were willing. A vote was taken and was unanimous in following S.D’s proposal, with all current members agreeing to stand. The full committee for 2010 is below.

Chairman:            Stu Davis

 Fee’s And Fixtures

J.B stated that the current fees were not presenting any problems from his perspective as treasurer. S.D commented that there may a slight increase in fixture prices, but not really enough to warrant an increase in society fees. S.D also mentioned the possibility of 50th anniversary society outing in 2011, and that maybe a separate form of saving scheme that could be formed.

JB proposed that the fees for 2009 be frozen at £30.

It was agreed by all that the annual fee be frozen at  £30 with early payment reduction set at £25 if paid before Feb 19th.     2010.

Fixtures

Bill M listed Worcester, Droitwich, Sapey, and Enville for 2011?

Eric C listed Izaak Walton

Tom H listed West Midlands

Chris M listed Oswestry

Jason O listed Penn, Great hay, Little Lakes

Leigh C listed Cleobury Mortimer as an all day fixture.

R.W questioned if  the current fixture costing is ok, or do we want to pay more for some venues, it was agreed that the prices we are paying is ok.

It was agreed by everyone that we seek out new fixtures or ones we certainly haven’t played for many years.

 AOB

L.C spoke about the captain’s day attendance and what could be done to improve it in the future. The thought of using the football cards was mentioned again as a possibility to generate cash. The 2009 membership stood at 35 with 23 playing Captains Day.

B.D mentioned about trying to reduce the fee on Captain’s Day. J.B explained the reasoning behind this years non-refunding on the years last fixture, as we the committee voted to retain the money for extra funds for the society’s 50th birthday in 2011.

A general debate followed regarding various money saving methods, which included the possibility of money smoothing whereby you could pay regular amounts throughout the year so as to ease the burden of expensive fixtures. Although nothing was decided at this meeting, these ideas may come to fruition in time as the new season unfolds.

S.D spoke about the possibilities of losing 7 members from 2009, and the need to try to recruit as mentioned earlier. SD also mentioned of the slow uptake of new members directly from website enquiries. In 3 years only 3 people have joined by this method.

T.H proposed that we play a championship course as part of the 50th year celebrations.

B.D seconded.

J.O mentioned the possibilities of playing against other Dowty societies in 2010.

J.O mentioned about upping the proposed society fee to £30, but this was not taken any further as the annual fee had already been voted on earlier.

T.H spoke about new members handicaps and the problems of not really knowing their actual talent. But any problems along this line were probably rare and hopefully it has been managed in a satisfactory manner at the moment.

The Meeting Ended at 9pm.

Ron Washbrook. Secretary

6th April 2010

Members are reminded that this Friday 9th April is the closing date for the Chuch Stretton fixture.

Members are also reminded that to aid early organisation that they should E Mail either the Secretary,Treasurer or Chairman stating their intention to play.

13th April 2010

Following a committe meeting held today, it has been decided to change the Church Stretton fixture from the Fourball Shield to The Sid Willoughby Cup.

The competition will now be played as an Individual Stableford off Full Handicap. The Fourball Shield will now be contested at either Arscott or Severn Meadows dependent on entries.

18th April 2010

A tremendous turnout of 28 players including new members Richard Dunn, Dave Morris & Mark Forrest travelled to Church Stretton Golf Club to contest  the annual Fourball Shield. A beautiful afternoon high above the Carding Mill Valley amidst spectacular scenery saw most teams struggle to break par. Stableford scoring with the best 2 from 4 scores counting on each hole & all 4 scores counting on the par 3's eventually saw the Captains team of Jason Owen, Mike Baldwin, Chris Munn & Ekrem Kaya shoot a winning score of 101 points, 5 under for the round.

15th May 2010

24 members travelled to the redesigned Izaak Walton Club on the outskirts of Stone. A cool dry afternoon saw all players struggle with a tight course & difficult greens, reflected in the standard scratch score for the fixture being 77 (5 over par). Several players failed to complete the course with the eventual winner being Phil Latham with a nett score of 73. In second place with a nett score of 76 was Pete Williams who also had the best gross score with an 84. For the 2nd fixture running Chris Munn was also in the prizes finishing in 3rd place with a nett 76.

At the evening prize giving members were also reminded that the Annual Match against Greenfields had been arranged for Thursday 27 of May. Anyone wishing to play in the fixture should inform any committee man as soon as possible. A team of 18 players is needed for a 5.30 Shotgun start. The cost is £6 per player with a meal afterwards.

19th June 2010

Due to the unfortunate late injury to Steve Cooksey only 23 members travelled to Cleobury Mortimer Golf club to contest the George Booth Memorial & Geoff Lutner Pairs competitions. Wild cards were provided to cover Steve's abscence with a high scoring morning competition being won by Chris Munn,Neil Clifton & Mike Baldwin. In the afternoon a superb plus 8 score saw Sammy Hind & Ian Mooorby easily win the Geoff Lutners pairs competition. A new venue for the society provided excellent facilities with first class catering. The only downside to the day was the poor dress standard shown by some members for the evening meal & presentation. It is likely that similar dress standards may result in members being refused entry to the resturant at the next day fixture at Hawkstoone Park as their dress code will be much tighter. If any member is in doubt to the dress standards required by both the Society & Golf clubs please contact any committe member for advice

2nd July 2010

The draw has been made for the next round of the Individual Knockout & is as follows:

Pete Williams v Ron Washbrook

Richard Dunn v Phil Latham

Phil Plant v Bob Edwards

Bob Duckett v Chris Munn

Matches are to be completed by 31st July

11th July 2010

The lowest turnout of the year,18 members travelled to Arscott Golf Club on Friday 9th of July to contest the F.A. Hewitt Cup. A superb setting with the course in excellent condition saw a fairly low scoring event being won by Mark Haywood with a 39 point haul. In second place with 36 points was Phil Latham & third by virtue of a better back nine was Roger Collings with35. During rthe fixture Phil Latham also claimed the first Semi Final place for the Individual Knock out in beating Richard Dunn 5 & 3
